Well Health Insurance is accredited as a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The NHIS was set up by the Nigerian Federal Government under Act 35 of 1999 to promote access to quality and affordable healthcare for all Nigerians. The NHIS mandate under this law is to accredit healthcare facilities and Health Maintenance Organizations as part of the mission to promote health care accessibility, affordability, and quality in Nigeria.

Health insurance as a method of health care financing is steadily catching on in Nigeria. Health insurance coverage is becoming a very useful tool for families to promote quality of life and for employers to attract and retain employees. By making periodic small payments called insurance premium, the enrollee is insured against the cost of hospitalization and other covered benefits in the event of illness.

The NHIS scheme is comprised of formal and informal sector programs. The formal sector program is primarily anchored on 15% contributions from employer and employee with 5% by the employee and 10% of the employee salary contributed by the employer. There are private health insurance programs designed to cover the self-employed, families and individuals.
HMOs work with healthcare providers to ensure that the care the enrollee or client receives is appropriate and that the provider claims are paid promptly.
